Greenhouse plastic vs polycarbonate: start with the structure, not the sales page.

Polyethylene film and polycarbonate panels solve different building problems. The better choice is usually the one that fits your frame, replacement plan and climate-management priorities.

The short answer

Use greenhouse-grade film when you are covering a compatible curved or simple frame and you accept a planned replacement cycle. Consider polycarbonate panels when you are building a more permanent shell and the frame, bars and fastening system are designed for rigid panels.

UMass Extension describes low-cost polyethylene as a common covering and notes that an air-inflated double cover can last about four years. The same guide describes structured polycarbonate or acrylic sheets as more permanent, with a life of at least 15 years in its commercial greenhouse context. Penn State gives a broader practical replacement range of three to five years for double plastic, while noting that hard plastic panels are commonly used in structures intended to withstand winter snow loads.

These are extension-service reference points, not warranties. Film life depends on grade, UV exposure, installation, chemical exposure and wind movement. Panel life depends on panel specification, edge sealing, expansion allowance and the mounting system.

Do not compare only the square-foot price. The frame and accessories can change the true project cost. A panel decision may require compatible profiles, tape, end caps and a different framing approach; a film decision needs a credible plan for battening, lock channel or other fastening, as well as wind management.

A real extension example: double poly plus panel endwalls

UMass Extension published an energy-payback example for a 30 by 96 foot hoop house in Connecticut. Its assumptions were a double-poly roof, polycarbonate structured-sheet endwalls, a 60 F night setpoint and No. 2 fuel oil at $2.00 per gallon. In that worked example, replacing one conventional layer with IR film was estimated to save an average of 12% for the season; both films were assumed to have a four-year life. The value here is not the old fuel price. It is the project logic: different parts of one greenhouse can use different coverings because they do different jobs.

Fieldbook interpretation

A mixed envelope is often more useful than a purity test. A hoop structure may lean toward film on the roof while endwalls, doors or service areas use rigid material. The frame geometry and maintenance plan decide whether that complexity earns its keep.

Four decision notes before ordering

  1. Name the structure. Is it a seasonal high tunnel, a backyard greenhouse, or a long-term all-season shell?
  2. Write down the weather job. Snow, wind, cold-night heat retention and summer heat are different problems.
  3. Price the system, not the surface. Include inflation hardware, fastening, profiles, tape, end closure and expected replacement.
  4. Read the manufacturer installation guide. This is essential for panel expansion, compatible accessories and film warranty conditions.

Common questions

Is polycarbonate always better than greenhouse plastic?

No. The better material is the one compatible with the structure, project horizon, installation system and maintenance capacity.

Can one greenhouse use both film and rigid panels?

Yes. A hoop structure may use film on a curved roof while endwalls or service areas use rigid materials, provided the frame and details are designed for each material.
